Flansburg asked me if I had a Christmas song for something he was working
on and I whipped one up and recorded a version for his Hello CD of the
month club.” “Never knew I had it in me.” Give Me a
Second Chance For Christmas was rerecorded for Let’s Get Christmas
with drummer Mike Levesque and bass player Pete Donnelly who had been
on the road with Mike through 1999. Together their playing became more
intuitive and brought a higher level of improvisation and immediacy to
songs old and new.
The EP spins wildly, weirdly into an acoustic kitchen recording of Mike
singing the Backstreet Boys “I Want It That Way” -“I
had this neighbor, this little kid, who would face his boom box out into
my garden when he heard me working on music. He’s always crank the
Backstreet Boys record, that song, over and over. It’s a great song.
I figured it out on acoustic and played it back to him. Freaked him out.
Never played it again.”
A full band electric assault on “All I Want For Christmas Is You”
that subsequently leaves the songs lying in shreds follows. “Another
perfect pop song. Mariah Carey’s recording was just so overworked,
so polished. So we took a shot at it. We were on Columbia at the time
and one of the execs who loved Candy Butchers, loved our version of the
song and played it for Mariah. She thought it was a joke.
